Urban fantasy cover

Full hardcover wrap for AJ Calvin's urban fantasy novel Hunted. Artwork by The Noble Artist

Hunted: An Urban Fantasy Cover

Author AJ Calvin asked me to work on something a little different. We’d already worked on loads of fantasy art together, but this time she wanted me to work on her Seattle based Urban Fantasy. Above you can see the final hardcover wrap. I think it looks great with all the quotes, blurb, author bio and picture on it. It was great working on something a little different with AJ. I have worked on a few Urban Fantasy book covers now. They’re always a cool mish-mash of real life and the weird! It can really accentuate the strange, by setting it in an otherwise recognisable environment.

Previous work with AJ Calvin

I’ve worked with AJ quite a lot in the past! I’ve now illustrated book covers for two of her fantasy series now. One an epic saga of four books, called the Caein Legacy, which features a dragon… and you know I love working on those…

The other is the Relics of War fantasy trilogy. I love working with AJ, we really go deep into her settings and I get a real handle on all the creatures, characters and places within. I often like to kick off each project with a call. It’s been great on these bigger sagas, that we did all the covers in one stint. So it meant we could keep a great continuous aesthetic all the way through the books.

Working with AJ is cool because I get to make scorpion warrior art, or fantasy battle artwork. Or as I mentioned above… who doesn’t like making dragon art?

Make sure to follow AJ Calvin on Twitter and Facebook.
