Fantasy world-building

I’ve been working on some landscape concepts for a new client, Daniel Snapp. Daniel is currently working on fantasy world-building projects for the setting for his debut novel.
What is world-building for fantasy authors?
As a fantasy author, world-building is one of the most vital elements of creating a compelling story. It involves crafting a setting that feels unique, immersive, and alive, where every detail, from the geography to the history, culture, and magic systems, intertwines to create a rich, believable backdrop for the narrative. A well-built world enhances the stakes of the story, influences character motivations, and adds depth to the plot. Whether it’s a sprawling empire, a hidden forest kingdom, or a war-torn wasteland, the world becomes a character in its own right, shaping the experiences and actions of those who inhabit it. Through careful world-building, the author transports readers into a new reality where the extraordinary is possible and the limits of imagination are tested.

How important is art for an author when world-building for their setting
Art is a crucial component of fantasy world-building. It breathes life into the imagination and gives a visual representation of an author’s idea. I find it’s always easier to show something than explain it “a picture is worth a thousand words as they say…”
While an author’s words lay the groundwork for a world, art captures the visual essence of that world. Landscapes to creatures, technology, and magic. A chosen art style can help define the mood and atmosphere of a story, influencing not just how things look, but how they feel. Art provides a visual representation of the author’s vision. In turn it allows readers or viewers to connect with the world on a deeper level.
