Celebrating 100 book covers!
It may be late… but I wanted to celebrate reaching the lofty goal of illustrating 100 book covers. I hadn’t realised I’d met the goal a little while back, I think I’m clocking about 130 covers now…
What have I learned from illustrating over 100 book covers?
I love my career, it’s a job in which I wear many hats. I like to take these moments to reflect on my journey. In my almost fifteen year career as a book cover illustrator specialising in the fantasy genre, I’ve learned a few things… as you can imagine.
Artistic Skills
- Illustration Techniques: Working professionally, it’s given me the drive and opportunity to master various styles, largely in digital painting, but taking opportunities to train in traditional media.
- Colour Theory: I’ve developed a keen understanding of colour palettes that evoke the right mood for fantasy narratives. Of which there are quite a few, but I have my favourites…
- Composition: Arguably the most important… I’ve learned how to create dynamic layouts that draw the viewer’s eye and highlight key elements of the story.
Understanding Fantasy Genre
- Genre Tropes: As if I needed to… (being a fantasy geek) I’ve gained familiarity with common fantasy tropes. It’s great to know them, bend them and even break them to create something nostalgic and familiar yet unique and interesting.
- Symbolism: I’ve learned how to use established fantasy symbols within the artwork I create to help an audience develop an understanding of characters motives and journey.
Market Awareness
- Trends in Book Covers: I love having a snoop at what people are doing. Working alongside the greater artistic community is so inspiring. It also gives great insight into what will be received well in a crowded market, as well as how to stand out amongst other titles.
- Target Audience: Gaining an understanding of the different demographics within fantasy audiences and how to appeal to them individually.
Client Collaboration
- Communication Skills: Not something I’ve lacked… (especially if you ask the guys in the studio with me! I might have a chatterbox reputation…) However I’ve definitely improved my ability to explain my ideas and process, and get to the crux of what my clients are looking for.
- Feedback Adaptation: It’s not easy to pour your heart and soul into something and miss the mark, but in the commercial industry, you’re a professional providing a service. In the past fifteen years, I’ve really worked hard on the feedback process. It’s great to develop a rapport where feedback isn’t negative but an exciting step in a positive direction.
Business Acumen (I secretly love this bit, it feels great getting my work out to more people)
- Brand Development: It’s taken me some time but I’ve realised importance of personal branding. It’s nice to be recognised as someone people can get a great cover from, and enjoy the process. It’s also helped me in assisting clients in their branding, in creating series designs that feel consistent with their readers.
- Marketing Strategies: I am a huge fan of getting my work out. And this age of guerrilla marketing is perfect for the small business! Social media and portfolio sites are a huge boon, one that I feel I’m just still scratching the surface of. All of the communication avenues of social media has made networking with authors and publishers so much more achievable..
Technical Proficiency
- Software Mastery: Gained a great proficiency in various design software, such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, each with their own fair share of tricks of the trade!
- Print and Digital Formats: Learned the technical requirements for both print and digital book covers, ensuring high-quality results in various formats.
Project Management
- Time Management: Being the sole member of The Noble Artist, my time and schedule is my own to manage. I love it. I love dedicating time to what will develop me as an artist, the business itself and the awesome projects I get to work on.
- Portfolio Development: Built on my portfolio and created a collection of work I’m really proud of, with a diversity that showcases my range and style. Which gives me great confidence when looking to attract new clients.
I love the constant development, “every day is a school day” as they say. My experience has not only honed your craft but also positioned me as a known professional in the competitive field of book cover illustration.
