100 Book Covers

Celebrating 100 book covers!

It may be late… but I wanted to celebrate reaching the lofty goal of illustrating 100 book covers. I hadn’t realised I’d met the goal a little while back, I think I’m clocking about 130 covers now…

What have I learned from illustrating over 100 book covers?

I love my career, it’s a job in which I wear many hats. I like to take these moments to reflect on my journey. In my almost fifteen year career as a book cover illustrator specialising in the fantasy genre, I’ve learned a few things… as you can imagine.

Artistic Skills

  1. Illustration Techniques: Working professionally, it’s given me the drive and opportunity to master various styles, largely in digital painting, but taking opportunities to train in traditional media.
  2. Colour Theory: I’ve developed a keen understanding of colour palettes that evoke the right mood for fantasy narratives. Of which there are quite a few, but I have my favourites…
  3. Composition: Arguably the most important… I’ve learned how to create dynamic layouts that draw the viewer’s eye and highlight key elements of the story.

Understanding Fantasy Genre

  1. Genre Tropes: As if I needed to… (being a fantasy geek) I’ve gained familiarity with common fantasy tropes. It’s great to know them, bend them and even break them to create something nostalgic and familiar yet unique and interesting.
  2. Symbolism: I’ve learned how to use established fantasy symbols within the artwork I create to help an audience develop an understanding of characters motives and journey.

Market Awareness

  1. Trends in Book Covers: I love having a snoop at what people are doing. Working alongside the greater artistic community is so inspiring. It also gives great insight into what will be received well in a crowded market, as well as how to stand out amongst other titles.
  2. Target Audience: Gaining an understanding of the different demographics within fantasy audiences and how to appeal to them individually.

Client Collaboration

  1. Communication Skills: Not something I’ve lacked… (especially if you ask the guys in the studio with me! I might have a chatterbox reputation…) However I’ve definitely improved my ability to explain my ideas and process, and get to the crux of what my clients are looking for.
  2. Feedback Adaptation: It’s not easy to pour your heart and soul into something and miss the mark, but in the commercial industry, you’re a professional providing a service. In the past fifteen years, I’ve really worked hard on the feedback process. It’s great to develop a rapport where feedback isn’t negative but an exciting step in a positive direction.

Business Acumen (I secretly love this bit, it feels great getting my work out to more people)

  1. Brand Development: It’s taken me some time but I’ve realised importance of personal branding. It’s nice to be recognised as someone people can get a great cover from, and enjoy the process. It’s also helped me in assisting clients in their branding, in creating series designs that feel consistent with their readers.
  2. Marketing Strategies: I am a huge fan of getting my work out. And this age of guerrilla marketing is perfect for the small business! Social media and portfolio sites are a huge boon, one that I feel I’m just still scratching the surface of. All of the communication avenues of social media has made networking with authors and publishers so much more achievable..

Technical Proficiency

  1. Software Mastery: Gained a great proficiency in various design software, such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, each with their own fair share of tricks of the trade!
  2. Print and Digital Formats: Learned the technical requirements for both print and digital book covers, ensuring high-quality results in various formats.

Project Management

  1. Time Management: Being the sole member of The Noble Artist, my time and schedule is my own to manage. I love it. I love dedicating time to what will develop me as an artist, the business itself and the awesome projects I get to work on.
  2. Portfolio Development: Built on my portfolio and created a collection of work I’m really proud of, with a diversity that showcases my range and style. Which gives me great confidence when looking to attract new clients.

I love the constant development, “every day is a school day” as they say. My experience has not only honed your craft but also positioned me as a known professional in the competitive field of book cover illustration.

I had the pleasure of working with Jamie (the Noble Artist) a few years ago when he made the cover for my book, Demon Lord Rising. He was fantastic to work with and seemed to really enjoy trying to get the cover the way I envisioned it. I found him to be incredibly skilled and reasonably priced. I can't imagine doing a book without him working on the cover.

Jamie did a fabulous design for my fantasy book cover, The Treasure of Trenalon. I had a pretty clear conception of what I wanted going in. He asked for a lot of detailed information to make sure that he understood what I wanted, and more importantly, what the right feel was for the characters, setting, and genre. In all of our interactions, Jamie was friendly and enthusiastic. He sought input and was open to feedback every step of the way. His initial thumbnail sketch blew me away. There it was: everything I wanted. And more! He put in elements I hadn’t considered that fit the story to a T and made for a stronger image. I asked for a few tweaks, which he quickly delivered. He knocked the final cover out of the ballpark. I also needed to brand the cover with a previous cover in the series, and he nailed that. Every step of the way, I felt his commitment to my being happy with the finished design. He also finished the job according to our timeline. Jamie is a consummate artist and a pleasure to work with. I will definitely seek him out for my next project.

I hired The Nobel Artist to design a book cover, and a short book trailer, for me on a limited budget and relatively short time frame. He was quick with all communication throughout our time working together. The work, in my opinion, was exemplary and I will definitely be considering The Nobel Artist as my first choice for my next book cover. We had one slight delay during our project which he was honest and swift about informing me of (something unavoidable came up - not important for the review). As I said, his work is amazing and he was a pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend this talented artist to everyone.

I have used Jamie for numerous corporate projects, from marketing collateral to case study production. The reason for approaching Jamie was to have a more creative approach to the look and feel of the collateral I needed. The final product has always provided me with an increase in engagement, and the use of his graphic production in wider content sharing. Highly recommend if you are looking for your content to stand out!

I've worked with the Noble Artist since 2015ish, and he is always reliable, and produces some wonderful artwork. Not only does he do a fantastic job with the artwork side of projects. But on a personal level he is friendly, easy to get along with, and passionate. 🙂

When my girlfriend and me found out we were having a baby and when I told Jamie, he made a beautiful drawing of a baby, so we could surprise our families. He also drew me the best portrait for my D&D character. I told him a little bit about him and when the portrait was finished it was like looking into a mirror and seeing Istorvir Nirinath, the ever smirking Half-Elf Bard 😊

Absolutely stunning work I've had the please of working with Jamie on a board game project and I must say that I absolutely stunned by his ability to take my rough sketches and concept ideas and turning it into amazingly detailed illustations, that not only fit the idea but also expands on it and makes it even greater. Furthermore he is a pleasant person to work with and I've experienced fast responses to both my initial query and later questions. Good on updating you on the proces and giving timely updates. Perfect !
