Sci-fi gang art, members of the underworld for the Aetherial War series
Nathan Doverspike commissioned a series of illustrations for his Aetherial War setting. In previous blogs I’ve covered the terrifying creatures, the special forces soldiers within the game and now I can show off these bosses of the underworld.
I was particularly excited to work on these pieces as it gave me an awesome pang of nostalgia for my time playing Necromunda (a gang warfare game, by Games Workshop). In Necromunda, the hive city teems with rival gangs vying for power and territory. Necromunda’s vibrant yet dangerous world is brought to life through striking sci-fi gang art, which captures the unique identities and aesthetics of each gang.
From the sleek, high-tech outfits of the more affluent factions to the ragged, makeshift gear of the underbelly, I loved the diversity. It made collecting a particular gang feel unique, and their aesthetic often reflected their skills. In that way, Necromunda’s sci-fi gang art not only enhances the visual appeal but also deepens player engagement. I wanted to try and create the same vibe for players of the games within the Aetherial War series.
Other settings, like the sprawling underbelly of Coruscant in Star Wars or the lawless expanses of the Expanse universe, were also great places to explore for influences when putting these pieces together.

These guys are the troops from Aetherial War, they will be used for Nathan’s sci-fi board game art, but I’m sure he’ll enjoy using them as marketing for his books in the series. Heavily armoured and armed with cutting edge weaponry (pun intended…) they make for dangerous adversaries.
Hi I’m Jamie!
I work on fantasy and sci-fi board game art for various clients from authors to game publishers. I have had some great clients working on both established IPs and new settings. If you’re looking for a fantasy artist, feel free to snoop through my illustration portfolio or head straight over to contact me for work. You’ll find my email address and some handy forms which guide you through some of the starting info I’ll need to be able to quote for you. Typically I’m booked up a month ahead of time, but do drop me a line if you have anything time sensitive. Sometimes I’m able to move things around in a pinch. Hope to hear from you!
