Sci-fi board game art for the Aetherial War series
I showed off some black and white pieces I did for sci-fi author and game designer Nathan Doverspike for his Aetherial War setting. [I’ve now done a whole load of art for the series, see it here and here.]
As a digital artist with over a decade of experience in sci-fi board game art, I can confidently say that character design is crucial for creating immersive gameplay experiences. Unique sci-fi characters not only serve as visual focal points but also help establish the game’s tone and atmosphere.
As a player myself, when I encounter vividly designed aliens or futuristic beings, I’m drawn into the world, it gets my imagination going and builds my connection to the game. As an artist, I know that well-crafted creature designs not only convey lore but can hint at gameplay mechanics, and even the strategy of how to play or defeat them. Ultimately, strong sci-fi board game art elevates a game from a simple pastime to a captivating journey through uncharted galaxies.

These guys are the troops from Aetherial War, they will be used for Nathan’s sci-fi board game art, but I’m sure he’ll enjoy using them as marketing for his books in the series. Heavily armoured and armed with cutting edge weaponry (pun intended…) they make for dangerous adversaries.
