Time Rift – Collectible Card Game art

Collectible Card Game Art

I was overjoyed to hear from the new director at Trivium Studios when he contacted me about the historic duelling game, Time Rift. I love these kind of games, so the chance to produce collectible card game art, was an instant win for me. The game features real historic characters, I’ve worked on three now for the game, but my first (and current one I can show off outside of NDAs) was Spartacus. The gladiator turned rebel. Loved getting the chance to draw some classic gladiatorial armour!

Cassis Crista, roman gladiator artwork. Spartacus art by The Noble Artist. Art for Time Rift.

Cassis Crista

This helmet is the cassis crista. Variations were worn by Roman soldiers of a high rank, and also they were used by gladiators on the scorching sands, fighting for life and limb the entertainment of Rome.

For gladiators, the cassis crista was all about looking fierce and standing out in the arena. These helmets weren’t just for protection, they were made to impress the crowd. The crests, usually made from horsehair or feathers, added height and flair, making each fighter look bigger and tougher under the arena lights. Different designs showed what kind of gladiator someone was, almost like a costume that told their story before the fight even started. The cassis crista made every battle feel like a show! Dramatic, bold, and totally unforgettable.

Libertas

Libertas was the Roman goddess of freedom. Basically the symbol of being free to live your own life and make your own choices. The Romans saw her as the spirit of independenceShe was often shown wearing a loose robe and holding a rod or a cap, which represented a freed slave’s new liberty. Over time, she became a symbol for freedom everywhere even inspiring the Statue of Liberty. We used her to represent something the slaves and gladiators could get behind in my artwork for Spartacus.

Kitchen Utensil weapons?

This one was pretty funny as it represented the gladiators and slaves rising up with whatever they could lay their hands on. I wouldn’t play ‘Knifey-Spoony’ with him… (I hope you get that old Simpsons reference…).
