Domain of the Deathless King – DnD art
One of the holy grails of the fantasy artist is getting to work on Dungeons and Dragons art. Luckily for me, I was commissioned to illustrate five dynamic DnD art pieces for Archmage Press.
The Kickstarter was a roaring success and was backed by almost 1,600 people. Hopefully that means more work for me in future as Archmage continue to add titles to their Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition range.

Expedition to Eagles Watch
“Can we have a skeleton warrior attacking the reader while a Manticore descends into his lair?”
Yes Archmage Press, yes you can. What an awesome brief. I loved working on this DnD art piece, from laying out the perspective of the lair, to designing the manticore, to fine detailing the skeleton running at the viewer, sword raised, screaming a silent scream!
Across the Fire Marshes
As I thought it couldn’t get any more exciting than the first brief, Oliver and Mel from Archmage followed it up with… “A seven headed hydra, erupting from the water by a bridge, near a volcano that turns the sky red”.
I love painting dragons, and I got to do a seven in one! This was awesome, and I knew the colour palette I wanted to work with before I’d even started. Roaaaaar!
I really love the sense of mayhem as they smash through the bottom of the bridge, sending water and debris flying!

City of Chaos
I wanted to make sure that each book had a discernible colour scheme, this one was the night sky blue palette. Giving the dark warrior the details on his armour and trinkets was a lot of fun. And the perspective of the golem’s giant hand coming towards the viewer gave it some real energy.
I spent a silly amount of time designing the city streets behind the golem for some reason, though you can barely see any of it!
At the Precipice of Pandemonium
My favourite dragon art piece I’ve done to date. I love the composition of this.
The shards pointing up at the roaring dragon and the glass fortress looming in the background.
I was cool working on the face of the dragon, adding the shards of glass that are growing painfully from its skin!

Throne of the Deathless King
There he is in all his evil glory! The Deathless King. Lich of dastardly doom!
I loved the eerie blue light mixed with the fiery braziers burning beside him. I wanted him to look like he was looking down with malice at the reader, robes in tatters, decaying with age. An ancient sword by his side, that he will rarely use, his power – dark magic spells, unimaginable and terrifying.
This feels to me like a classic DnD art piece from days of old. I had such a blast painting it!
A description of the Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition series
Domain of the Deathless King is a massive D&D 5E adventure with all the world building and adventure creation already done.
It is the first ever 5E adventure series that allows you to play a normal game of D&D, either alone, or with up to four players. You play just as you normally would, around a table, with full character sheets and dice. The only person missing is the Dungeon Master.
We have all heard or even said…
- Being a Dungeon Master is hard.
- I don’t know any good DM’s.
- I don’t have a group to play with.
- I want to play a full game of D&D on my own but I don’t want to be the DM.
- I could never be a DM, they are all so good and I’m not.
Whether you have heard it called the DM crisis or the Matt Mercer Effect, whatever the name, there are are many thousands of groups of D&D fans that do not play as much D&D as they would like because being a DM is hard.
With Domain of the Deathless King it no longer matters.
